The London Library is the largest independent library in the world. It was founded in 1841 by Thomas Carlyle as an independent subscription library. The library has a rich history: the Earl of Clarendon was the Library's first president, Thackeray its first auditor Gladstone and Sir Edward Bunbury were on the first committee. Early members included Dickens and George Eliot. The collection now contains over one million books and periodicals and the library operates a flexible postal loans service.
