The Royal Observatory was founded in 1675 to study astronomy and to establish longitude. This is the location from which Greenwich Mean Time is measured. (A ball on the roof drops daily at 1 p.m.; this was traditionally used by ships on the Thames to establish the time.) The prime meridian line, which divides the eastern and western hemisphere, is marked in the courtyard. Visitors can view a display of telescopes and other instruments used by astronomers in the past.
