Ludgate is of extreme historical importance. Once the City of London was surrounded by a great stone wall that marked its boundary but also protected those who lived and worked within the walls from aggressive armies. Ludgate was the western most of the entrances to the ancient city. However for many hundreds of years the walls have not existed. Many archaeological discoveries have been made in the immediate area around Ludgate.
