Any building that’s been around for over 400 years is bound to have a rich history, and this pub is no exception. Legend has it that the villainous highwayman Dick Turpin was born at the inn (his father was landlord in the early 18th century). Other famous patrons were William Blake, Joshua Reynolds, John Constable and Lord Byron. The pub also has some famous fictional connections, being mentioned in Charles Dickens’ “Pickwick Papers” and in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula”. History aside, the huge, beautiful beer garden is well worth a visit.
