The Village is the main street of Charlton. A village was here in the 11th Century, when it was recorded in the Domesday Book and surrounded by fields. It has long since been swallowed up by London, but The Village stills feels a little like one. There's still a 17th-century church, the remains of a village green with a 1920s war memorial, a drinking fountain, and a horse trough and the old Gothic Gatehouse to Charlton House, a mansion.
