This family tombstone has been preserved in the grounds of the Greenwich Royal Observatory because Edmond Halley was such an important figure in British astronomy it was felt that he should be honoured in this way. A true polymath, Halley became Astronomer Royal and indeed had his own Meridian Line just a few yards to the west of the final line that was decided upon. He is probably best remembered for his discovery and subsequent naming of Halley's Comet.
