The main entrance to University College London is an example of the Greek revival style, and was designed by William Wilkins, the architect of the National Gallery. Founded in 1862, UCL was the first university to be established in England after Oxford and Cambridge, and it challenged the existing discrimination and exclusivity in university entrance requirements. It was the first university in England to admit students of any race, creed, or political belief, and also the first to accept women on equal terms with men. Jeremy Bentham is strongly associated with it, and his enlightened ideas on education and society imbued its founding principles.
