This small garden was created at the same time as the rest of the Embankment, in the late 19th century. The garden has many historical features, most notably the water gate that was built in 1626 as an entrance to the Thames for the Duke of Buckingham. The gate is still in its original position, but since its creation the Thames water line has moved and the gate is some 100 metres from the water. There are also many statues of famous people in British history, including the poet Robert Burns.
