Born in Liverpool the son of a moderately successful artist, Walter Crane moved to London to practice art in his early twenties. He became well known because of his unusual style, but also because of the political messages he would put into his works. He studied under William Linton, a great advocate of the Chartist movement, some of which helped form Crane’s strong socialist sympathies in later life.
