West Norwood was the second of the so-called “Magnificent Seven” Victorian cemeteries to open, in 1837. It contains 65 grade II and grade II* listed monuments. There are memorials to Mrs Beeton, of cookery book fame and Sir Henry Tate Hiram Maxim, inventor of the automatic quick firing gun. The tranquil grounds feature many varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers and are a haven for foxes, squirrels, owls and hawks. The Friends of West Norwood Society hold general tours of the cemetery on the first Sunday of every month.
