Wimbledon was once a village on a hill many miles from the bustling capital. However as London has grown it has swallowed up most of Wimbledon and surrounding villages into an urban sprawl. The idea of the West Wimbledon Conservation Area is to preserve a village lifestyle in the area, stop expansion and strictly control building in the area. The result has been an overwhelming success, preserving an early twentieth Century village in the middle of London. Situated on top of a hill the views of London are spectacular, rivalled only by the peace and tranquillity of the leafy streets. It is well worth a trip.
