This busy shopping centre is unusual because it occupies the building and retains the name of Britain’s first department store. Whiteleys store opened in 1863 and closed in 1981, reopening as a shopping centre in 1989. The marble staircase at the heart of the centre is a grand leftover from the store. Whiteleys is the biggest shopping centre in Central London and home to an assortment of shops selling clothing, accessories, gifts, books and food. The upper floor houses a variety of restaurants and a multi-screen cinema.
