Woolwich Foot Tunnel runs under the Thames from Woolwich Docks to North Woolwich. It opened in 1912, and with the ferry often delayed by smog or fog, it was a popular alternative. Thousands of dock and factory workers used it for many years. Today it is little changed but much less busy. The former dock worker and Labour politician, Will Crooks, had the tunnel constructed when he was Chairman of London County Council's Bridges Committee. This is the southern entrance.
