Woolwich Polytechnic was the second to be opened in Britain after the Regent Street Polytechnic. Founded in 1891, it started out as the Woolwich Polytechnic Young Men's Christian Institute and this was its first home. Designed by HH Churdy, the bulding has an interesting decorative terracotta façade. The original institution admitted over 500 students in its first five weeks. It has since been absorbed into the University of Greenwich.
