A writer, dramatists and musician, Gilbert loved living in Kensington because historically it has always been a place for the creative. In the 19th Century the houses around Gilbert's were all full of aspiring writer's and artists trying to make the grade in the competitive London market. Gilbert managed this with some ease and quickly became one of the best recognised names in musical theatre after collaborating with Alfred Sullivan and forming the Gilbert and Sullivan writing partnership.
