Alice Liddell was a daughter of Henry Liddell, Dean of Christ Church, Oxford, and as a child spent many happy summers at their holiday home of Pen Morfa – later known as the Gogarth Abbey Hotel, Llandudno. Charles Dodgson was a friend of the family and, intrigued by Alice’s adventures, was inspired to write his magical book – Alice in Wonderland – under the name of Lewis Carroll. The sculpture, unveiled by Lloyd George in 1933, depicts the White Rabbit and stands on West Shore, with Pen Morfa in the background.
