Bangor diocese was founded in the 6th Century when Deiniol and his followers established a monastic community at Bangor. Deiniol was consecrated Bishop and the church became a cathedral. The present building, dating from the 13th Century, was restored in the late 19th century by Sir George Gilbert Scott. One of its great treasures is the Mostyn Christ, a 15th Century oak figure of Christ shackled to a rock. Other features of interest include early statues, memorials, a 14th Century sepulchral slab, medieval tiles, and the `mouse mark` of craftsman Robert Thompson.
