Basingwerk Abbey started as a Savigniac community but in 1147 merged with the Cistercians. The abbey became quite prosperous after being granted gifts of land by both the English crown and the Welsh princes. After it was dissolved in 1536 parts of the abbey were used for other buildings, including Holt Castle. The most impressive part of the structure that still survives is the monk`s refectory with its lancet windows. A path from the car park on the A548 at Greenfield leads to the ruined abbey.
