Prison life was harsh in the 19th Century and at Beaumaris Gaol the visitor can see the gloomy cells and workrooms where prisoners spent their days. All inmates were given work and those sentenced to hard labour broke up stones or worked the treadmill which provided the water supply. Whistling in the cells was an offence and could lead to a spell in the dark punishment cell. You can see the condemned cell where those to be executed spent their last days. An experience unlikely to be forgotten, Beaumaris Gaol is best combined with a visit to the Courthouse.
