Bird Rock
Dysynni Valley, Tywyn, Gwynedd - Wales, UK
  Share Location Map

Bird Rock, a prominent feature in the Dysynni Valley, is the only inland nesting site for cormorants in Europe. Known in Welsh as Craig yr Aderyn, the hill also holds the remains of Bronze and Iron Age fortifications on a lower peak. The rare chough also nests here, as well as ravens and birds of prey. From the summit are spectacular views of the valley and towards the Cader Idris range. There are several starting points for walks leading to Bird Rock and a lane with a small parking area passes beneath it.

My Nain and Taid lived in Pont y Garth, a lovely farmers cottage opposite Bird Rock. As a child, I thought Bird Rock was as big as Everest! I used to love coming here.... the valley is so beautiful.... and all the more so for the funny (Bird) rock sticking out like a naughty child. When I think about Pont y Garth and Bird Rock, I think of fun-filled adventures on the river, up the rock with my dad and trips down to abergonolwyn (sorry for the spelling) to get sweets from the shop. It is my most favourite place in the world and I can still hear my Taid laughing like a drain at the breakfast table and I still think of the beauty of that valley with the river and Bird Rock... wishing I was there now. - Nia Hoon
