First built in 1277 by Dafydd ap Gruffudd, Caergwrle Castle was taken by Edward I after Dafydd, previously an ally, changed sides to fight against him. Over 1000 men were employed in the rebuilding, and the king gave it as a gift to Queen Eleanor. An accident caused the castle to burn down six months later, and it was never rebuilt. From the centre of Caergwrle a good footpath leads uphill through woodlands to the ruins, from where there are good views over the surrounding countryside.
