Now a World Heritage Site, Caernarfon Castle is one of the castles founded by Edward 1 to subdue the Welsh. Sited at the mouth of the River Seiont, it was built as a fortress and a seat of government. Building began in 1283 under the direction of Master James of St George and Edward 1`s son was born in the castle a year later. The high curtain wall with its huge polygonal towers withstood the sieges of Owain Glyndwr in the 1400s. The Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum is housed in the castle. In 1969, Prince Charles was crowned Prince of Wales here.
