Built between 1796 and 1801, the 70 feet high Chirk Aqueduct was designed by Thomas Telford and William Jessop to carry the Ellesmere Canal (now known as the Llangollen Canal) across the Ceiriog valley. Although not as high as Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, which is just a few miles away, it is nevertheless an impressive structure. Beside it is the 100 feet high viaduct built for the Shrewsbury and Chester railway line. There is a towpath beside the canal, and a riverside path passes through the field under the aqueduct.
