The walled town of Conwy was once one of the country’s most important pearl fisheries harvesting over 4 kilos of pearls per week in the 19th Century. Musseling is still in operation today but on a smaller scale and the museum provides the history of the Conwy mussel from its uses in Roman times to the discovery of the ‘Conwy Pearl’ used to decorate the Crown Jewels during the reign of Charles II. From aphrodisiac to culinary treat these Welsh mussels have something for everyone!
