Completed in 1826, the Conwy Suspension Bridge was designed and built by Thomas Telford to replace the dangerous ferry crossing over the tidal waters of the River Conwy. During the 18th Century there had been an increase in the number of travellers. The supporting towers of the 100 metres long bridge were built to blend in with the medieval walls and towers of Conwy Castle. At the eastern end is a tiny toll-keeper`s cottage. After the building of a new wider road bridge, Telford`s bridge closed on 30 November 1958. It is now owned by the National Trust.
