Guarding the entrance to a pass through Snowdonia`s mountains, Dolbadarn Castle stands high on a rocky hill between two lakes. Built in the early 13th Century by Welsh prince Llywelyn ap Iorwerth to protect his kingdom, the tall keep served as a prison for Owain ap Gruffydd, brother of Llywelyn the Last. Lord Grey of Ruthin, enemy of Owain Glyndwr, was also imprisoned here. There is a car park opposite the short, rough path that climbs to the castle.
