Eliseg`s Pillar is the remains of a twenty foot cross erected in the 9th Century by Cyngen, Prince of Powys, as a memorial to King Eliseg, his great-grandfather. Eliseg is said to have recovered land taken by the English. The cross was pulled down and broken during the Civil War. The remaining part of the pillar was re-erected in 1779 and the mound on which it stands was excavated revealing a tall skeleton. The pillar is in a field beside the A542, a few hundred yards from Valle Crucis Abbey.
