The reputed burial place of Gelert, Prince Llewelyn’s faithful hound, is in the lovely village of Beddgelert. According to legend, Llewelyn went hunting leaving Gelert to guard his baby son. Returning to find the dog covered in blood with no sign of the infant, Llewelyn believed Gelert had killed his son and plunged his sword into him. Gelert’s dying yelp was answered by a baby’s cry, whereupon Llewelyn found his son safe next to the body of a giant wolf. Full of remorse, Llewelyn realised his mistake too late.
