The Llangollen Railway operates on part of a line that originally ran from Ruabon to Barmouth. It was closed in the 1960s, but now part of the line in the Dee Valley is being gradually restored by a preservation society. This is a standard gauge line, using mainly steam locomotives, and the railway passes through some stunning scenery. There are small stations and halts, some with tearooms, and walks can be taken between them. The walk from Carrog to Glyndyfrdwy is recommended.
