The packhorse bridge spanning the River Alyn in Caergwrle dates from the 17th Century. It was built on the trade route of the Chester to Corwen packhorse trail when hundreds of animals crossed the river every day. Panniers or baskets were carried on each side of the animal and the bridge`s parapets were built low to accommodate them. Nowadays, this picturesque, historic bridge is used daily by local people going to and fro.
