In the nineteenth Century Llanddwyn Island became an important point of navigation for ships carrying slate out of Bangor and through the Menai Strait. These cottages were built to house the pilots who guided the ships. Two of the cottages have been restored and accommodate a small museum featuring the history and wildlife of the area. The canon seen near the cottages was used to summon volunteers to man the lifeboat that was also housed here up until 1903. It saved 101 lives during 63 years of service.
