In the late 18th Century, two ladies eloped from Ireland and settled in Llangollen at the house now called Plas Newydd. Their names were Sarah Ponsonby and Lady Eleanor Charlotte Butler, and they developed a passion for collecting wood carvings. They were visited by many famous people who brought them antiquarian gifts such as stained glass and carvings from church chests and furniture. The result is extraordinary and visitors can tour this fascinating building, see an exhibition, and explore the gardens.
