Porth Amlwch was only a tiny creek in the 18th Century, but after the development of the copper mines on nearby Parys Mountain the cove was widened by quarrying the eastern side. By 1800 the port could hold thirty vessels. Ship building also took place and the remains of old shipyards can be seen on a heritage trail around the small port. Porth Amlwch is now used mainly by pleasure craft, but it retains much of its original character and an exhibition explaining the port`s industrial past can be seen in the Sail Loft.
