Rhuddlan Castle was built in the late 13th Century by King Edward 1 on a site that for many centuries had been an important crossing of the River Clwyd. He had the river canalised so that seafaring ships could bring in supplies. The castle has a concentric design with a pair of four storey high gatehouses whilst near the river stands the impressive Gilot`s Tower overlooking the dock. The castle was held for the king during the Civil War. After surrendering to the Parliamentarians in 1646 it was partly demolished.
