Now a ruin, this once substantial sixteenth Century chapel was built on the site of an earlier shrine to Dwynwen, patron saint of lovers. In Tudor times pilgrims came to Llanddwyn Island to leave offerings on her shrine and to visit her holy well. According to legend, the faithfulness of a lover could be divined by scattering breadcrumbs and a handkerchief on the surface of the water. If the eels that lived in the well disturbed the handkerchief then your lover would remain faithful.
