Agricola founded Segontium after he conquered the Ordovices about AD77, and it was the main Roman base in north Wales until the garrison finally left at the end of the 4th Century. It was built as an auxiliary infantry fort to hold about a thousand men. The site has been extensively excavated and the foundations are exposed so that visitors can see the layout of the site. There is a museum housing finds from the excavation, and detailed information about the remains of the fort.
