St Collen, a hermit from Glastonbury, founded a church at Llangollen in the 6th Century. It is said he killed a man-eating giantess who lived near the Horseshoe Pass. Dating from the 13th Century, the present church has a splendid pair of 16th Century hammerbeam roofs adorned with angels. There is a 14th Century tomb in the north aisle. The church was altered 1864-1867 into a three aisled church. In the churchyard are buried the famous Ladies of Llangollen, Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, who lived at Plas Newydd.
