St Mary’s Church is located in the village with the longest place name in Britain - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. Translated to English the name means - "The church of St. Mary in a hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and near St. Tysilio’s church by the red cave" - although nowadays it is often abbreviated to Llanfairpwll or Llanfair PG. In the grounds of the church lies a memorial to all those who died during the 1826 construction of Thomas Telford’s suspension bridge which towers majestically across the Menai Straits.
