The village of Maentwrog derives its name from the four foot high stone that stands beside the porch of the church. The name in English means the Stone of Twrog, and it is said that Twrog, a missionary from Brittany, threw the stone from a nearby mountain to smash a pagan altar on the site. Built on the foundations of an earlier building, the present church is 19th century. It contains interesting stained glass and carvings. In the churchyard there is a yew tree said to be over 1000 years old.
