According to legend, this holy spring rose where St Winefride`s head fell after it was cut off by a rejected suitor in the 7th Century. Her uncle St Beuno restored her to life, and she lived for another 22 years. Since then the well has been a place of healing and pilgrimage, and it is known as the Lourdes of Wales. The shrine is in a 16th century building, and pilgrims can make arrangements to bathe in the well. All visitors are welcome, and there is an exhibition telling the story of the saint and her shrine.
