Sygun Mine was one of several copper mines worked around Beddgelert during the 18th and 19th Centuries. Sygun closed in 1903 and, after restoration work, opened to the public in 1986. Visitors can take an audio-visual tour which explains what it was like to be a Victorian copper miner. There are stalactites and stalagmites and the tour involves climbing a series of ladders underground. In the 1950s, the area around the visitor centre was transformed into a Chinese village for the making of the film `The Inn of the Sixth Happiness`.
