Near the coastal path between Moelfre and Lligwy Bay stands the poignant memorial to the loss of the Royal Charter in 1859 when over 400 people lost their lives. The luxurious fast steamship was on a voyage from Melbourne, Australia to Liverpool when she met a hurricane force wind and ran aground only 25 yards from Anglesey`s shore. Most of those on board were returning gold diggers and, although the villagers tried to help, only 40 people survived and none were women or children. Gold was washed ashore for months afterwards.
