The East Lancashire Railway is one of Britain’s best preserved rail heritage experiences. Opened in 1846 it was a popular passenger and freight route serving the Irwell Valley from Bury, via Ramsbottom, to Rawtenstall and beyond. Today, the service operates historic steam trains from Rawtenstall to Heywood passing over viaducts and through tunnels. There are special events throughout the year, such as Santa Specials and Friends of Thomas the Tank Engine.
