There has been a defensive building on the site since Roman times, and since then several buildings have held off attacks from the Picts, Scots and other forces. Today you can see where the Lancashire Witches were tried and convicted, the dungeons and the Drop Room, the “Hanging Corner” where prisoners were executed, and the Crown Court, still used to this day. Guided tours are available, and local theatre groups often use the Castle for performances of Shakespeare plays.
