Lancaster’s river, the Lune, is tidal, and until recently was navigable by large trading vessels, giving Lancaster a long maritime history. The Maritime Museum was set up in 1985, in former Customs offices and a warehouse, to chart the maritime history of the area. Using reconstructions, computers, audiovisuals and exhibitions of artefacts, the museum makes a fascinating day out. In addition, the museum now houses an educational area, packed full of information about the ecosystems of Morcambe Bay, the River Lune and Lancaster Canal.
