The School of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology at the University of Liverpool has been pioneering in this field of study since the late 19th Century. The largest part of the collection is made up from Egyptian displays, the basis of which is derived from the excavations made by Professor John Garstang and Sir Robert Mond. In total the museum is home to over forty thousand artefacts.
