The Royal Liver Building, which overlooks the River Mersey from its waterfront location, is probably the most famous building in Liverpool. It can be found on Water Street, but seen from much further afield (including from the Mersey Ferry, which is probably the best vantage point). The building was completed in 1911 and the two winged creatures visible above the cupolas are known as "liver" birds. Local legend says that if they fly away, Liverpool will cease to exist. It’s a good job therefore that the 18 foot tall copper birds are attached by very strong cables! Photograph courtesy of Terry Horton.
