This beautiful property was completed in 1896, and was given as a gift to the city by Henry Yates Thompson. It was designed in the tradition of Paxton’s glasshouses and was stocked with a large variety of exotic plants. The building has a long and interesting history that has seen it fall in and out of favour with the community, and during the war it had to be hidden by camouflage to stop bombers using it as a target for guidance.
