Harvey Lonsdale Elmes designed St George’s Hall, commencing building in 1842 and completing it two years later. The structure is widely regarded as one of the most impressive neo-Classical buildings in Europe. The splendid chandeliers and gilded plasterwork make for fascinating details for visitors to discover as they walk around the property. During Dickens’ time, the great author on several occasions used the hall to give readings to the public.
