Whalley Abbey Gatehouse
Whalley, Clitheroe, Lancashire BB7 9SS - England, UK

Map
The nearby Cistercian abbey for which this was the gatehouse, was one of the wealthiest in Lancashire, and this is obvious from the grandeur of the ruins that remain of the property. Built in the 14th Century beside the River Calder, it is believed by historians that the first floor of the building would have served as a chapel. English Heritage is in charge of the maintenance and upkeep of the site and surroundings.
